Forum: GratefulDead Subject: JGB

In honor of his birthday, I am reposting my "happiness is JGB" collection of "starter links" for anyone new to JGB, from awhile back. (I neglect to post the link to the original thread, which turned icky fast, unfortunately.)

Here is a starter collection of JGB on youtube, for Althea and anyone else who is new to JGB. Warning: there is no turning back, it's musical heroin.

Catfish John 3-01-80
This is my all time favorite Garcia video. Psychedelic swamp funk; classic Garcia all the way.

I could manage with no other Jerry videos if I had to; I’m not sure how I DID manage for about 30 years without this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n81doCdMzwE&;;feature=related

Midnight Moonlight 9-11-76
Second favorite. Music that makes everything all right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79SdU3ZQ_U0

Lonesome and a Long Way From Home 4/03/76
– in two parts: the first time I listened to this, I thought I’d never heard a piece of music so fantastic ever before in my life. That might be right. This old road keep rollin’ on and on … somebody help me …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRX8kpkL6iM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnh9IqRrnZ8&;;feature=related

Takes a Lot to Laugh, Takes a Train to Cry. Jerry with Merl. Wins the most insanely beautiful prize.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emzY-7Riqas&;;feature=related

Splice of Sitting in Limbo/That’s All Right Mama
3-1-1980
A must watch for the video as much as the audio. The height of the Feb-March 1980 JGB frenzy – probably the high point for JGB. The All Right Mama is the rockin’-est thing ever. That’s all right Jerry, any way you do …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suLpY610jq0

When I Paint My Masterpiece 3-08-80
Another song I obsess over helplessly. This just appeared recently. More 1980 frenzy. Not my absolute favorite Masterpiece but gives you the idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iJX2LgJh10

Another nice Catfish John (you can’t have too many):
2-18-78

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHbWLdYnhLo&;;feature=related

Tough Mama
What a great song. Meet me at the border late tonight …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ryfj8Vp2QI

Mystery Train 11-15-76
Hate to tell ya boy, that train don’t run here anymore …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqcNdMT3ldo

Stop That Train 7-08-76
More great ’76. Donna is doing what she does best here, too.
Won’t be too long, whether I’m right or wrong …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgbON1-sFCY

Gomorrah 1977
Perfect:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkB_gjh5brU&;;feature=related

Positively Fourth Street:
10-27-75
“poor sound quality” the reviewer says, but sounds pretty fine to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qT04i2KnLxY

Let’s Spend the Night Together 12-20-75
It is difficult not to mentally supply Mick Jagger’s verbal flourishes
I’ll satisfy your every need (every need)
Don’t hang me up don’t let me down (don’t let me down)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4pUdZsTWTc

Sisters and Brothers 9-5-89
“acid gospel”
I wish there were earlier versions of this but I just so love this song, and actually this is fantastic.
Let us take our fellow man by the hand ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGFf1XL9AUU

Robert Hunter doing Tiger Rose 2-29-80 (a rarity)

Wow, I didn’t know this was here! Just appeared. I love this song. Wish there was real video. Love me like you did last night just one time more …

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duRI2TFAPh8

Wow Promontory Rider is here too!!! (same date)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnfLQ-S0GbY

Good Night Irene 7-16-88
I am not inclined toward the latter era JGB. But this was a party! Good night (Jerry), I’ll see you in my dreams.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9DdTPmAiTM

Finally, here is a complete JGB show on youtube: 3/18/78
And it’s a classic show, too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4vKtjSgPlM&;;feature=related

set list:
Harder They Come
Mission in the Rain
Simple Twist of Fate
Midnight Moonlight
Gomorrah
Cats Down Under the Stars
I'll Be With Thee

If others know of complete JGB shows on youtube, let me know!

This is just a drop in the bucket, and more get posted all the time.

Just wanted to say I did NOT mean to bump this - does that happen if you edit the post? (Guess I'll find out.)

Muchisimas gracias for this smorgasbord of tasty JGB! It's an embarrassment of riches!

Couldn't help but notice this great comment from the Catfish John vid:

"Phil said in court under oath that Jerry was a cool dude."

Another full show (with video), of Jerry and Grisman (OUTSTANDING SHOW!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RForMDpxuAY

And some single songs:

That's What Love Will Make You Do – JGB 1975 (Jerry's tone is so perfect)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIZXi9LWBKA

Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder – JGB 1975 (same show as above, one of my favorite songs they covered, Jerry and Hopkins are on fire)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_FZAfApEbU

Positively 4th Street – Jerry and Merl 1973 (One of the sweetest versions)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BSwbhZFBkA

Goodnight Irene – Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band 1987 (one of my fav versions, a bit different than ones with just Kahn, I love the Zero rec too!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkDfBb683lk

Babe It Ain't No Lie – Jerry and Kahn 1982
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1dAbouXuc4

I'll Take A Melody – JGB 1975

Note that "Lonesome" from this show is a rebuke to those who say JGB didn't jam ...

I could think of a couple things that start a day better,
but I have neither right now. That makes Jerry number ONE.
So, not a bad way to start the day I must say :)
I listened to WHFS for years over yonder there. Thanks
for that blast from the past. GR8 radio station. And
an awesome show so far, and Im only up the 'Mission in the
Rain'... its gonna be a grateful afternoon. I think my
co workers are on to me. heeheeheeheeheehee

Hey, I still dont think that the Entertainment rag cover
is Jerry. Thats why some call me an idiot (is that Rich
I hear?) sometimes. OK, all the time. BUT

Anyway, do you think this is Gene Siskel at the
begining of Brent's last show? Sry to bring in a death
reference on such a birthday, just curious.

Again this might have already been answered around here if
I know this place. So just amuse me an answer of your own
if you would

Anyway here's another way to ensure you get very little done this afternoon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&;v=30d1lUSVVtc&NR=1

the danger being actually WATCHING Jerry ...

This is one that Arbuthnot very kindly sent to me a few months ago.

Shake it up now ...

That has to be siskel. Or an evil twin. he was from Illinois and I'm assuming he got seats from the Dead so they knew where he was sitting. Thanks for pointing that out Craven

no way to know for sure but he is spot on for the late Siskel. A little trivia...the guy who wrote the film, The Ref, was nominated for an Oscar for The Fisher King. Oo the Siskel and Ebert Academy awards special, Siskel singled his nomination out as a weak selection. The guy was so pissed he named a scummy character in The Ref "general Siskel" just to get back at him.

HA
Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges are the king and the dude.
Fisher King? come on... one of the classics for me.
Excellent trivia. My buddy is a IMDb head, he will love it.
And Leary and Spacey? If they are wrong, I dont wanna be right.
Just might have to watch The Ref soon now.

Thanks for the tidbit. Its one of those things that I will
remember. Richard LaGravenese is whom you are talking about?.
Have to to a little lookin on that.
wiki alert~ "Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars and wrote, "material like this is only as good as the acting and writing. The Ref is skillful in both areas".

Love to learn new stuff. Thx.
Hope you enjoyed Jerrys 70th last night. I know I did :))
I can still taste the music...
